Biography: Vellaisamy, A. L. Roy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Materials Science at the City University of Hong Kong. Roy started his research on light-emitting materials during his PhD (awarded in 2004), mainly on Electron Spin Resonance analysis of molecular materials. In 2003, he worked on the growth of wide band gap ZnO and their optical properties at HKU (EEE). For his postdoctoral studies, he worked on an EU (European Union) project on light-emitting transistors (LETs) for lasing/display applications and continued his research on LETs at HKU as a Research Assistant Professor (2005 to 2008). He joined City University as an Assistant Professor in Dec’ 2008 and established a multi-disciplinary group consisting of electronic engineers, physicists and chemists. Later, he obtained an accelerated promotion to Associate Professor level in the year 2012. His research interest extends from the design and synthesis to optoelectronic characterization of functional materials and device engineering of sensors and optoelectronic memories. Roy received the TRIL Fellowship awarded by ICTP (funded by UNESCO) in 2003 and Excellent Product Awards for project prototypes at China Hitech-Fair for consecutive three years (2011 to 2013). He has published over 120 papers in international journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Applied Physics Letters etc. and filed 10 patents.
