Biography: Dr. Ferguson is Professor of Orthodontics and Dean, European University College at Dubai Healthcare City, United Arab Emirates. He is formerly Professor and Chair of Orthodontics at Boston University and has held the positions of Executive Director, Center for Advanced Dental Education and Associate Dean for Dental Education at Saint Louis University, as well as Chair of Orthodontics and Director, Advanced Orthodontic Training Program, Marquette University. Dr. Ferguson is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and past president of the EH Angle Society, Midwest Component. He served as a senior Fulbright scholar (a US national scholar award) at Alexandria University, Egypt, and has lectured extensively at university, regional, national and international forums. He received all of his professional dental degrees in the USA with a DMD degree from University of Oregon and an MSD in orthodontics from University of the Pacific. Research interests include surgical-orthodontic topics including selective alveolar decortication, bone biology and tissue healing related to tooth movement. He has authored over 100 articles and abstracts for many professional journals and publications as well as contributed chapters to several textbooks.

Title: Augmented Alveolar Corticotomy and Accelerated Orthodontics: In-vivo Tissue Engineering

Abstract:

Outpatient surgical injury of cortical alveolar bone combined with augmentation bone grafting is called Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) and is most recognized for reducing active orthodontic treatment times 3X to 4X times (6 months instead of 2 to 3 years). World-wide interest in accelerated orthodontic treatment has steadily increased during the past 15 years, and PAOO has become the global “gold standard” for accelerated tooth movement techniques. PAOO features full periosteal flap surgery and decortication is performed when orthodontic treatment is initiated which facilitates accelerated tooth movement secondary to transient alveolar trabecular bone osteopenia. The main benefits of PAOO have become widely known: reduce active treatment time, increased scope of malocclusion treatment, and enhanced long-term stability likely due to augmentation bone grafting. The materials used for alveolar augmentation bone grafting are deproteinized bovine bone, autogenous bone, decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft, or a combination thereof. 
In medicine, great efforts are made to avoid osteopenias, but orthodontic technique capitalizes on the transient nature of local alveolar osteopenia to accelerate tooth movement. As such, PAOO is a tissue engineering technique for generating high tissue turnover locally and regeneration/generation of tissues. The consequences are clinical time economy, greater stability of treatment outcomes and enhanced robustness of the tissues supporting the dentition.
