Biography: Dr. Arghavan Tonkaboni graduated in dentistry from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, in 2003. She became specialist in oral medicine in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2011. Now she is working as an assistant professor in oral medicine department of Tehran University of Medical Sciences from 2012. She had fellowship in medical education and I passed some courses in medical laser and advance immunology.

Title: INTENSIVE ORAL CARE IN CANCER TREATMENT; THE NEGLECTED PART

Abstract: Cancer and malignancies are one of the worldwide problems which can induced oral complications due to cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation. These reactions can cause interruption in treatment which compromise the prognosis and cost of the disease. Oral and pharyngeal pain, salivary gland hypofunction, oral mucositis, oral fungal or viral infection and xerostomia can lead to dysphagia which lead to malnutrition compromising quality of life. Multifactorial nature of these problem represent out of access cure. However intensive oral care via regular schedule can facilitate the treatment.  The protocol should be divided in 3 parts; before cancer therapies, along the cancer therapies and after that. Secondary to the complexity of cancer and process of treatment oral specialist should be familiar with psychological competency in order to communicate well to persuade their patients to have precise self-care. I want to review some oral care protocols to remind their main role in cancer treatment continuation.
