Biography:

He is a principal of the Collaborative Centre on Air Pollution Policy Delhi.He is most well known for his work on the health impacts of air pollution from simple household cookfires, work which Prof Smith pioneered with studies in Gujarat in the early 1980s and has conducted in about 10 Indian states as well is a number of other countries in Asia and Latin America, including Nepal, China, Laos, and Mongolia. This risk is now recognized to be responsible for about 9 lakh premature deaths a year in India and a significant cause of outdoor air pollution as well.

He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences and also was awarded the Heinz Prize in Environment and the Tyler Prize for Environmental.
He has been presented more than 150 abstracts.
